Involving the blood and bone marrow, leukemia represents approximately 28 percent of all childhood cancers. Some of the symptoms associated with common forms of the disease, such as acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL), are weight loss, fatigue, joint pain, and pale skin.
With acute lymphocytic leukemia, the child’s bone marrow generates excessive immature white blood cells known as lymphoblasts. These abnormal cells tend to crowd out white blood cells that are healthy, resulting in anemia or increased susceptibility to bleeding. They also impact the body’s ability to fight infections.
There are two subtypes of ALL: B cell or T cell. The risk groups are divided into “standard” and “high.” Because acute leukemias can spread rapidly, cases of ALL are treated through chemotherapy regimens from the moment they are discovered.
